Scott woke up with a smile. He had his arms around Jar, it was a beautiful sunny morning, and they’d just fu—no. No, they’d made love for the first time ever. He was lying here with his best friend and the only man he’d ever really fallen for, the man he’d missed but didn’t know how to say so because he’d been the one who left town. He had never dreamed he’d deserve this if he was going to be that far away, and it would never have been fair to Jar.

Then come to find out Jar didn’t want anyone else either. How crazy was this? He’d left California at loose ends, not sure what he was going to do with himself next, not sure if he was going to go back or not, not even sure whether he wanted to. But he’d finally managed to do something right, and now everything was clear. He was staying, he was going to be with Jar, and he was only moving forward. He wasn’t going to worry about the past; he was going to hold on to Jar and find a future.

“You’re thinking loudly,” Jar mumbled against his chest.

He chuckled. “How did you even know I was awake?”

“The way you breathe. And you sighed.”

“I sighed?”

“Mhm.” Jar turned his head up and kissed his chin. “Morning.”

Scott shared his smile with Jar and kissed his forehead. “Good morning.”

“How did you sleep?”

Like the dead. “So well. I crashed hard. That was a hell of a day.”

“Mhm. It was a tough one, but it ended well.” Jar was still waking up and sounded so sweet and sleepy.

“Yes. I couldn’t have asked for a better ending to the day.”

Jar yawned, rolled onto his back, and stretched long, and Scott got to admire all the lean, tan muscle. “Are you going to make me breakfast again?”

“I can do that.” Food would be good for Jar.

“I have so much to do today. I’m dreading it.”

“I know. And I have to go pick up Ma and get her settled at home; then I told her we’d go see Dad. He’s not real good on the phone.”

“Yeah, I know. I tried to call when he was first—when Ma first agreed to let him go there, and it was awful. I don’t anymore, I just go to see him once a week.”

“That’s nice of you.”

Jar shrugged. “Well, he’s the dad I have left, you know?”

Scott nodded. His parents had been like Jar’s forever. “He’s not doing great, is he?”

Jar sighed. “No. He’s not. I mean, he has good days. But his bad days are really bad. He gets combative and angry, I think he just gets scared when he can’t remember what’s going on. They sometimes give him meds to keep him calm, but then it’s like visiting with a zombie. They haven’t found the right answer yet.”

“He definitely has crystal-clear moments, Jar. The last time I took Ma, he stared me down and told me he needed me to stay in town and take care of her.
